Closer.

0
Such a raw, honest, intimate film about relationships. Brilliantly written dialog that is delivered just as flawlessly.

In my life, I've found that the brutal truth is far more less detrimental to my psyche than any ill thoughts that I can potentially dream up within my own mind; thus freeing myself from my own personal mental hell and allowing me to accept reality for what it is.

I think the following dialogue is a great example of Larry finally getting closure and being able to move on with his life.

Anna: Why is the sex so important?
Larry: Because I'm a fucking caveman!
Anna: We do everything that people who have sex do!
Larry: Do you enjoy sucking him off?
Anna: Yes!
Larry: You like his cock?
Anna: I love it!
Larry: You like him coming in your face?
Anna: Yes!
Larry: What does it taste like?
Anna: It tastes like you but sweeter!
Larry: That's the spirit. Thank you. Thank you for your honesty. Now fuck off and die, you fucked up slag.

Creative Robots.

0
I find it ironic when people who are labeled as "Creative" in their 9 to 5 jobs have absolutely no creative projects and passions outside of their corporate jobs. Does your creativity cease once you leave the office? Is it just an act? Is creativity a switch you can just turn on and off at will?

"If you define your personality as creative, it only means you understand what is perceived to be creative by the world at large, so you're really just following a rote creative template. That's the opposite of creativity."--Chuck Klosterman

All we do is destroy to satify our needs.

0
I ended up catching the documentary Sharkwater in New York City last night. Being a filmmaker and a scuba diver, this film absolutely amazed me. The underwater cinematography was gorgeous and the film featured a great ambient soundtrack. An extremely informative, well edited documentary.

Through the hardcore scene, I have been exposed to tons of animal rights literature over the years and have made quite a few vegan friends, however, nothing has really served as a wake-up call like Sharkwater has

100 million sharks are killed a year for a multi-billion dollar shark finning industry. Sharks have been around for 450 million years pre-dating the dinosaurs, and now, the Shark population has decreased by 90 percent in the last 100 years. It really puts things into perspective to think that man has nearly wiped out an entire species that has survived five major extinctions and has been around since the dawn of time.

Dining Dead.

0
When I was first dating a girl several years ago, we went out to dinner in New York City. We ate at this Italian restaurant where the table's were spaced literally inches apart from other couples dining in the restaurant. We sat down next to this couple who had obviously been dating for years. They must have spoke 5 words throughout their entire meal. In contrast, inches apart from the silent couple, my date and I carried conversation for a good half-hour as they sat in silence.

It was an interesting parallel to see how two people can initially be so intrigued by one another, yet, a few years down the road that spark can slowly deteriorate. I think we've all been there at one point in our lives, but what will we all do to avoid it?

"Are we like couples you see in restaurants? Are we the dining dead?"--Joel, Eternal Sunshine

My grandma had a cancerous growth in her nose removed last month and has finally returned home. I saw her last weekend and it got me to thinking. On my death bed, what would I truly regret not doing?

Do we know each other?

0
What does it really mean to know someone? You can spend years, even decades with a person, and still not know who they truly are. Whether it's a family member, friend, or significant other, perhaps we should be more mindful of who our loved ones really are.

I bought "Life After God" by Douglas Coupland as a Christmas present for my brother a couple of years ago, but somehow it has landed back in my apartment. I recommend it to any twenty-something, as I guarantee at least one of Coupland's stories will hit home.

"She says to me, but were we ever intimate? How intimate were we
really? Sure, there were the ordinary familiarity-type things- our
bodies, our bodily discharges and stains and seepages, an encyclopedic
knowledge of each other's family grudges, knowledge of each other's
early school yard slights, our dietary peccadilloes, our TV remote
control channel-changing styles...

And yet?

And yet in the end did we ever really give each other completely to
the other? Do either of us even know how to really share ourselves?
Imagine the house is on fire and I reach to save that one thing-- what
is it? Do you know? Imagine that I am drowning and I reach within
myself to save that one memory which is me-- what is it? Do you know?
What things would either of us reach for? Neither of us know. After
all these years we just wouldn't know...."

Dreamers Never Live.

0
It's seems as if many people go through their lives looking for a type of manufactured "movie-love". Americans want that picture perfect storybook romance that exists in Hollywood, the advertising industry, and mainstream music.

It was a nice to surprise when I picked up Chuck Klosterman's, "Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs" and the very first chapter dealt with this type of "movie-love" many people are looking for.

I think this ultimately ties in with the ill-conceived notion of the "American Dream." There is an overwhelming sense of entitlement in America. As Tim Kasher of Cursive describes it; dream cars, dream houses, dream jobs and dream spouses. We are so busy dreaming of a picture perfect life that we expecte to be handed to us. By that logic, what we are essentially left is just our dreams and the need for more. Don't think, just do.

"The main problem with mass media is that it makes it impossible to fall in love with any acumen of normalcy. There is no 'normal', because everybody is being twisted by the same sources simultaneously."

Coldplay songs deliver an amorphous, irrefutable interpretation of how being in love is supposed to feel, and people find themselves wanting that feeling for real....He's just pouring fabricated emotions over four gloomy guitar chords, and it ends up sounding like love..

You can't compare your relationship with the playful couple who lives next door, because they're probably modeling themselves after Chandler Drive and Monica Geller. Real people are actively trying to live like fake people, so real people are no less fake
